Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude,
Fourth Edition [DTLA-4]
Donald D. Hammill
Ages: 6-0 Through 17-0
Testing Time: 40 Minutes – 2 Hours
The DTLA-4 is the test of choice for professionals interested in a thorough
investigation of a person’s cognitive functions. The test not only measures
basic abilities, but also shows the effects of language, attention, and motor
abilities on test performance. Results from the 10 subtests can be combined
to form 16 composites that measure both general intelligence and discrete
ability areas.
The DTLA-4 was normed on 1,350 students residing in 37 states. The demographic
characteristics of the normative sample are representative of the US population
as a whole with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, urban/rural residence,
family income, educational attainment of parents, and geographic distribution.
Norms are stratified by age. The test provides percentiles, standard scores
(subtest: M=10; SD=3, composite/quotients: M=100; SD=15), and age equivalents.
Internal consistency reliability coefficients for the DTLA-4 generally exceed
.80 for the subtests and .90 for the composites. Test-retest coefficients
range from .71 to .96 for the subtests, those for the composites all exceed
.90, and scorer reliability coefficients were all in the .90s.
New to the DTLA include studies showing the absence of gender and racial bias,
new validity studies, and new, more appealing, color pictures in the picture
book.

Developmental
Activities Screening Inventory (DASI-II)
The Developmental Activities Screening Inventory-II (DASI-II) is a revised
edition of the popular Developmental Activities Screening Inventory (DASI).
DASI-II is designed to provide early detection of developmental disabilities
in children functioning between the ages of birth and 60 months, although
the lowest scorable age is 1 month. This informal, individualized test can
be easily administered by classroom teachers. Developmental skills assessed
by DASI-II cover 15 skills categories ranging from sensory intactness, means-end
relationships, and causality to memory, seriation, and reasoning. A matrix
is provided for identifying the concepts tapped by each test item. Instructions
are given either verbally or visually.
Complete DASI-II Kit includes: Examiner’s Manual, 50 Record Forms, 37 Picture Cards, 5 Set-Configuration Cards, two pairs of Numeral Cards, three pairs of Word Cards, and 4 Shape Cards, all in a sturdy storage box - 1984. (B0501) $184.00

Developmental
Assessment of Young Children (DAYC)
Judith K. Voress, Taddy Maddox
Ages: Birth through 5
Testing Time: 10 to 20 minutes
Administration: Individual
Use the DAYC to identify children birth through 5-11 with possible delays
in the domains of cognition, communication, socialemotional development, physical
development, and adaptive behavior. You’ll have five subtests (one for
each of the above domains) that you can administer separately or as a comprehensive
battery to individual children in about 10 to 20 minutes. You will be able
to identify infants and young children who may benefit from early intervention.
Each of the five domains this test measures reflects an area mandated for
assessment and intervention in IDEA for young children. Tailor your assessment
to your clients’ needs by assessing any combination of these domains.
Involve parents and caregivers by interviewing them as part of the assessment
process. The DAYC format allows you to obtain information about a child’s
abilities through observation, interview of caregivers, and direct assessment.
The DAYC may also be used in arena assessment so that each discipline can
use the evaluation tool independently.
The DAYC was normed on a national sample of 1,269 individuals, broken into
23 age groups. Characteristics of the normative sample approximate the 1996
census. The reliability of the DAYC has been studied, and evidence relating
to content-sampling and testretest time sampling reliability is provided.
Reliability coefficients range from .90 to .99. Standard Error of Measure
(SEM) ranges from 1.5 to 4.74, with the majority smaller than 3.0. Reliabilities
for children identified as environmentally at-risk and biologically at-risk
are .98 and .99.
Compared to Battelle Screening, criterion-referenced validity, construct-validity,
and content-description validity are provided. Using the DAYC, you will obtain
standard scores, percentile scores, and age equivalents. The test also gives
you a General Development Quotient (GDQ) if all 5 subtests are completed,
but all subtests can be used independently for each domain.
Complete DAYC Kit includes: Examiner’s Manual; 25 each of Adaptive, Cognitive, Communication, Physical, and SocialEmotional Scoring Forms; and 25 Profile/Summary Forms, all in a sturdy storage box. (B8730) $388.00

Evaluating
Acquired Skills in Communication-Revised (EASIC-R)
Ages: 3 months
through 6 years
Testing Time: 15 to 30 minutes
Administration: Individual
Evaluating Acquired Skills in Communication (EASIC) is an inventory that was
developed to measure spoken language (receptive and expressive) of children
with autism aged 3 months to 6 years. It was field-tested on 200 individuals
with autism over a 6 year period. Although the materials were developed for
persons with autism, the EASIC has also been used successfully with all kinds
of people who have developmental language delays.
The EASIC assesses semantics, syntax, morphology, and pragmatics communication
skills at five levels:
· Pre-Language—before meaningful speech
· Receptive I—understanding simple noun labels, action verbs,
and basic concepts
· Expressive I —emerging modes of communication
· Receptive II—understanding more complex language functions
· Expressive II—using a more complex level of communication
Once the assessment is completed, the EASIC's results can be displayed on
the Skills Profile. This form provides space for displaying the results from
up to five assessments, taken over time, and provides a means for showing
the changes that have occurred from one testing to the next. In addition,
the results can be portrayed on the Developmental Age Chart, where communication
skills are arranged in easy to difficult order along with age ranges at which
children normally acquire each described skill. Finally, 142 Goals and Objectives
cards are provided. These cards are directly tied to the skills described
in the inventory and can be used in the development of intervention plans.
TARGET GROUP: 3 months-8 years
Complete EASIC-R Kit includes: Manual, 312-page stimulus picture test book, 53 supplementary picture cards, 142 goal-and-objective file cards, 5 copies of each test booklet, 5 copies of each skill profile, storage box. (B9710) $306.00

Great
Beginnings™ for Early Language Learning
Linda Levine
Great Beginnings
is ideal for speech-language clinicians and teachers who specialize in young
children who have delays in language, speech, and cognition. Six individual
sets of cards and manipulatives focus on main areas of language development:
Nouns 1 and Nouns 2 each include 40 full-color 6" x 8" photographs
that appeal to very young children. Nouns 1 features food and animals; Nouns
2 features toys and body parts. With these colorful cards you can teach new
vocabulary, attention to pictures, basic categories, and functions of objects.
Concepts features 57 full-color, 6" x 8" photographs, plus more
than 35 manipulatives, including:
Use the manipulatives
and photos to target object-to-picture matching skills and to introduce and
reinforce concepts such as color, number, size, same/different, categorization,
prepositions, and associations. They¹re more effective with toddlers
than structured drill activities that just use pictures. You can also use
the manipulatives with other Great Beginnings sets as well, in a variety of
structured and unstructured activities.
Association depicts 20 nouns in a variety of ways. Each noun is represented
in a full-color photograph, plus one color illustration and one black-and-white
drawing - 60 6" x 8" cards in all! Each picture depicts the noun
in a slightly different way to help children move from concrete to abstract
thinking.
Verbs has cards that depict 15 actions, each presented twice-once by a boy
and once by a girl. You can aid in generalizing verb concepts and introduce
gender distinctions. You get a total of 30 full-color, 8" x 10"
cards.
Prepositions provides practice for these eight early-developing prepositions‹in,
under, out, in front of, on, in back of (behind), off, next to (beside). The
24 full-color, 8" x 10" photographs will aid in generalizing the
concept of location, help you introduce gender and pronoun distinctions, and
drill the use of prepositions.
TARGET GROUP: 2 1/2-4 years
Each Great Beginnings set includes a storage box, manual, and a Language Activity Booklet with a variety of practical activity suggestions. (B6400) $570

Cecil R. Reynolds and Erin D. Bigler
Ages: 5-0 Through 19-0
Testing Time: Less Than 45 Minutes
The TOMAL includes 10 regular subtests and four supplementary subtests that
evaluate general and specific memory functions. The TOMAL is helpful to examiners
when evaluating children or adolescents referred for learning disabilities,
traumatic brain injury, neurological diseases, serious emotional disturbance,
and ADHD. The 10 core and 4 supplemental subtests provide information on specific
and general aspects of memory and are used to derive the Core Indexes and
Supplementary Indexes.
The test was normed on more than 1,000 children and adolescents ages 5-0 through
19-11, from 17 states representing all major regions of the United States
and are representative of the population with regards to gender, age, ethnicity,
urban/rural residence, and geographic distribution. Scores produced by the
TOMAL include standardized or scaled scores (subtest: M=10; SD=3, composites:
M=100; SD=15), and percentiles. Reliability estimates are uniformly high,
with all composite and some subtest reliability values falling in the .90s
and nearly all exceeding .80. Test-retest coefficients are all above .70 for
the subtests, with most above .80, and for the composite indexes all values
exceed .80.
